Everyone's phones aren't working anymore except Mary's which rings a few times but then cuts out. When everyone starts to leave Mary sides with Natalie Callaway, saying no one should be leaving. She explains that her father has told her that if there's a chemical problem do not go outside.
Natalie accidentally bumps Mary, whose trying to sleep on one of the couches. She apologizes, but Mary says that she can't sleep anyway; she's in shock. They talk about their parents, both worrying that they're probably dead. Grover comes into the room carrying a blanket for Mary, telling her to get some sleep.Mary helps care for Lyle, Addy, Sam, and the others who are sick and came back to the school after leaving, in the fallout shelter. While discussing options Mary says that they need to stay in the school until someone comes to rescue them. Mary wonders why they would have come back to the school and Violet says that they probably came back because it was the only place left to go. This leads to an argument and Mary worries that maybe no one else is left, but Grover calms everyone down by saying that there's no way anyone could know.
Mary walks over to Barrett McIntyre, who is sitting in between the shelves trying to fix an old radio he found. He tells her it has battery issues and she says he seems like he could fix that. He smiles and says she knows who he is, and she responds that everyone at school does. But she'll judge him for herself instead of listening to the rumours. Barrett asks what she thinks of him, and she responds that she hasn't decided yet. He says that he also knows who she is because of her violin and she asks when he thinks the search parties will come for them. He says it may take a while because of the probable high body count, and when she mentions her parents work at the plant, he reassures her by saying it's Saturday and she shouldn't worry because it isn't productive. She asks him skeptically if he isn't worrying about anyone and he deflects saying that it'll probably be a few days until the rescue teams are sent for them.
Coach tells everyone to go upstairs to get some sleep, and Mary says that they can stay in the shelter to help. Grover argues with her that she needs to get some rest and that their parents would want him to look out for her, she argues back that their parents would want her to look after him as well, to which Grover replies that they can look after each other upstairs. Coach gets sick of the arguing and tells all of them to go upstairs to bed and leave him alone, and they all begrudgingly listen.
Grover wakes Mary up the next morning and they decide to bring supplies down to the sick kids in the fallout shelter. While packing supplies in the cafeteria Mary brings up their parents again, wondering if they made it. He deflects the question with a joke and she gets annoyed with him. While leaving the cafeteria Grover hears a noise but decides to ignore it and Mary mentions that their house is very close to the plant, Grover tells her that they were probably out shopping and Mary smiles. But as they head out of the cafeteria there is a figure of a man in one of the doorways, that they don't notice.
As they head down the hallway Mary jokes that the only reason that Grover is alive is because he was stupid enough to go to detention to meet Violet, and he jokes back that she should thank him for being stupid then. She says that maybe she'll tell Violet why he was in detention as a thank you and when he gets scared she says it wont make a difference because he'll never get Violet either way. But he smiles and says it wont be for lack of trying and she calls him an idiot.
When Grover and Mary head into the basement they are accosted by LaShawn Devereux and Zoe Parker who had just been attacked by a 'Freak' and had assumed that they were another one. When Grover asks what is going on they explain that they just ran into Mr. H. the janitor and that LaShawn had killed him. When Mary and Grover freak out that they had killed the janitor they keep explaining saying that it was him but it wasn't and that he had attacked them. Grover tells them that they need to tell the others and that he and Mary will tell Coach and figure out what to do. Mary and Grover then head into the fallout shelter and find all of the sick kids eating Coach. Mary drops the supplies that they had brought down, which gets the attention of the 'Freaks' and they start crawling over to them. Grover grabs Mary and pulls her out of the shelter with him, Addy grabs Mary's leg and Grover knocks her off and slams the door behind them, using a metal pipe keep the door closed.
Grover and Mary tell the others what happened in the fallout shelter, Mary explaining that the kids were drinking the Coach, and that all they can do is help themselves. This leads to an argument amongst the group about what to do with the friends that they had in the shelter. Mary says that what they know is that they went outside and got sick, which leads to the assumption that the air is the issue, and Barrett explains that they should act as if its a radiation issue, tape all the windows and doors to limit contamination, and gives them all assignments of what they should be doing.
Mary heads into the bathroom and Grover follows asking if she's okay. She says she's fine and tells him to leave her alone. Once he's gone she turns on the tap and reaches down to pull her pant leg up, exposing a bite that she got in the fallout shelter, and she looks in the mirror with worry.Mary hurries into the music room wincing at the pain in her leg and sits down. Grover follows her in and asks again if she's okay, and she unconvincingly tells him that she's fine. He assumes that she's upset about what they saw in the shelter and tells her that he's disturbed by it too, so she confides in him that she got bit by Addy. He goes quiet and she asks what he thinks is going to happen, he says that nothing will happen to her and they just need to be calm and clean the wound. After Grover leaves to get bandages, Natalie comes into the music room looking for her to do inventory in the cafeteria.
Mary and Natalie count the cans and Natalie says that they've got enough to keep them fed until they're rescued. Mary mumbles that they may not be rescued in time and Natalie asks if she's okay. Mary deflects by asking if there's anymore of the soup that Natalie had earlier and Natalie asks how she could tell since that was 5 hours ago. Mary says that she could smell it on her breath, Natalie finds this amusing but Mary seems more worried about this sudden talent.
Mary walks through the halls realizing that everything is brighter and louder than before, she bumps into Noodle who is on night watch and playing with Mr. Oink, a guinea pig from one of the classrooms. They talk for a bit until Mary looks blearily up the stairs. Noodle says she looks dazed and asks if she got into his locker, but she says she has a headache and needs to lie down. They exchange goodbyes and she heads down the hallway towards the covered doors. She peels back the plastic tarp that they've hung over the glass and looks into the fog, until a 'Freak' comes up to the glass and looks at her. They stare at each other for a while and when it growls she hits the glass keeping eye contact and the 'Freak' backs off. Grover comes up to her with the bandages and asks why she's at the doors and what happened, she says nothing so he says they should bandage her leg.
Grover treats Mary's leg with the peroxide and bandages her up, hoping that's all that they'll need to do, but she thinks she's gonna die. She references the soup incident with Natalie and Grover brushes it off as nothing, saying she's still warm and heads out to get her some water.
Mary starts playing the violin but drops it when the strings split her fingers open, and heads into the bathroom, where she finds Violet. Violet notices that Mary is pale and sweaty and asks if she's okay. Mary threatens her saying that she uses boys but Grover is one of a kind and deserves better than that, and that she better take care of him. Violet says she doesn't know what she's talking about and leaves Mary in the bathroom by herself. Once she's alone, Mary looks at her hand and licks the blood off of her fingers.
Grover finds Mary back in the music room attempting to play the violin but most of the strings are broken and she can't seem to play properly. She asks Grover what's happening to her and asks him to lie to the others so they don't lock her up. Grover agrees and leaves her in the music room.
She goes into the hallway and can hear all of the conversations in the room around her, and heads to Barrett's voice, where he's talking to someone on the radio. He follows her to try to explain, but she walks away. She heads down to the basement and he follows her picking up a crowbar out of fear. She grabs him and he jumps but Grover interrupts in time and Barrett runs back up the stairs. Mary and Grover look at each other as they both realize that she's turning.
Barrett and the rest of the group talk about their options of what they can do with Mary. They agree that when she turns she can't leave that room or she will be a threat to all of them.
Grover talks to Mary she's strapped to a cot in one of the classrooms, he asks her to say something and she gasps "kill me". Violet comes in to talk to Grover, and tells him that none of this is his fault and that he should come eat something, so he kisses Mary on the forehead and leaves her there sleeping.
Mary is sleeping on the cot and her eyes open as she turns, she arches on the cot and growls.Grover heads into the classroom that Mary is in and finds that she has escaped the constraints that were keeping her on the cot. Mary looks up at her and starts coming towards her and Zoe starts screaming for LaShawn.
Zoe jumps onto the lockers and onto the other side and starts running, when she bumps into LaShawn who was coming to find her, he asks what happened and she points to Noodle's body. He tries to go over to his friend but she pulls him away saying they have to get away. As they're running Mary attacks LaShawn making him drop the baseball bat that he had. He gets away from her and they close the gate so that she can follow them. They find Violet and Barrett and tell them what happened, and Violet realizes that Grover had just headed that way.
Grover comes across Mary in the hallway outside of the gym and calls her name, when she starts coming at him he runs. She chases him down into the basement and he manages to trap her in a caged section.
The group meets in the basement to discuss what to do with her, Grover doesn't want to hurt her but the others believe that she has to die because of what happened to Noodle. Barrett suggests that they keep her alive as a way to experiment and learn more about the 'Freaks', and the others agree to leave her in the basement for now.
Grover goes to the music room to mourn his sister and has a heart to heart with Violet, as Barrett goes into the basement to do experiments on Mary. He pulls out a blowtorch and from Mary's reaction, learns that 'Freaks' don't like fire.
Grover goes down to the basement to visit Mary and notices the blowtorch on the ground. He realizes that Barrett had brought it down and goes to confront him. Barrett explains that he wasn't torturing her, he just did some tests to see any potential weaknesses. They have a vote and Barrett wins 4 to 3 votes to keep studying Mary.
Grover goes down into the basement with his sharpened stick and puts it to her head telling her he's sorry.Grover sits outside of Mary's cage, the sharpened stick lying next to him, when Diesel comes down to see if he's okay. Grover and Diesel are at the doors looking out, and Diesel tells Grover that they did the right thing. Grover responds that he hopes so, when LaShawn comes running up with Zoe close behind. She tells them that LaShawn is seeing things, and LaShawn starts fighting Diesel yelling that they aren't safe in the school. Grover tells Diesel to take care of LaShawn while he takes care of the doors and Zoe helps him board the doors back up. While they are boarding the doors Barrett comes running up to them saying that Mary has escaped again and Grover nods towards the glass door, where she is on the other side.
While searching lockers Grover opens Mary's and looks at the photo of the two of them that she had on her locker door. Diesel reminds him that they don't have time, so he pockets the photo and moves on.
