They met up with Earl and Hailey early on and grouped together for safety and strength, and Jake became Earl's henchman.

Birdie says that Earl is worse than the 'Freaks' and Jake says that they need him since there's safety in numbers. He tells her that she can't fight when she has her seizures and that he wont always be there. She says that they can take Hailey and leave Earl behind, since she could watch over her when she has seizures. He says that she's useless and that he would just end up protecting them both. Jake says that it's Hailey's choice to listen to Earl, and Birdie argues that she only does to stay alive. He ends the discussion by saying that his only goal is to get her to safety so she can have a normal life, and she turns exposing the implant on the back of her neck and asks what kind of normal it would be.
